Villars-sur-Ollon

Snowboard instructor in Villars-sur-Ollon

Villars sits on a terrace above the Rhône valley looking straight across at the Dents du Midi, which is the view people remember long after the skiing. The slopes are gentler than Verbier's and considerably more forgiving, which makes it the better choice for a first week on skis, for children, and for anyone rebuilding confidence after a bad fall.

It works year round rather than seasonally. In summer the same terrain becomes hiking and climbing country, and the altitude golf course is one of the highest in Europe. Families make up most of what we arrange here, and the sessions are usually planned around two very different levels in one group.

Snowboarding

The first two days decide everything

Snowboarding is unusually front-loaded: the first two days are genuinely hard, and after that it gets fast. Most people who give up quit inside those two days, almost always because nobody showed them how to fall or how to link a turn. An instructor for that window is worth more than a whole season of trying alone.

Equipment and passes

Lift passes are arranged by you. Bring your own board and boots if you have them — boots especially, since rental boots are the most common reason a day hurts. If you are renting, say so when you book.

Common questions

I have never been on a board. Where do we start?

On the flat, learning to fall and to slide on one edge. It is less glamorous than it sounds and it is why some people progress in two days and others take two seasons.

I ski. Will that help?

A little, for reading the mountain. Not much for the board itself — the movements are almost opposite, and skiers often find day one harder than non-skiers do.

Can we book as a pair?

Yes, if you are at similar levels. Two beginners together works well; a beginner with an experienced rider does not.
