St. Moritz
Cross-country ski instructor in St. Moritz
St. Moritz sits at 1,800 metres in the Engadin, a high valley with a dry, bright climate that is closer to the Alps' southern side than to the rest of Switzerland. It averages over 300 sunny days a year, and the light at that altitude in February is the reason people keep coming back.
It is the birthplace of alpine winter tourism and it shows: the cross-country network across the frozen lake is among the best in Europe, and the resort supports everything from gentle to serious. Summer brings hiking, riding and one of the highest golf courses in the Alps.
Classic or skating, and they are not the same sport
Classic is the one most people picture: tracks, a gliding stride, relatively gentle. Skating is faster, considerably more demanding and closer to ice skating than to walking. Most beginners should start classic; most people who found cross-country dull were put straight onto skating skis by somebody who should have known better.
Why an hour of technique matters more here
Cross-country punishes bad technique immediately and exhaustingly. Efficient skiers glide; inefficient ones fight. The difference is almost entirely learnable, and it is the difference between a pleasant morning and a miserable one.

Common questions
Do I need my own skis?
No. Rental is straightforward at every cross-country centre and your instructor will point you at the right shop.
Is it easier than downhill?
Different, not easier. It is far less frightening and far more tiring.
What about trail passes?
Swiss cross-country trails usually require a pass, bought locally. It is not included, and it is inexpensive.
