Vevey

Hiking guide in Vevey

Vevey has the Lavaux vineyard terraces directly behind it, which is the single most useful geographic fact for anyone training here. Stepped paths rise from the lakeside straight into the terraces, giving a hill session with a change of gradient every few hundred metres — the sort of terrain runners elsewhere have to drive to find. The lakeside promenade towards Montreux handles everything flat.

The town is compact and the facilities are close to the centre. It is quieter than Lausanne and Geneva, which means fewer coaches available but also less competition for weekend slots. Corporate bookings from the companies headquartered locally make up a noticeable share of what we arrange here.

Hiking

The route is chosen on the day

Switzerland has extraordinary trail signage and it still catches people out, because conditions change fast with altitude and season. Your guide picks the route after seeing the forecast and meeting you, which is the whole point of hiring one rather than following a blog post.

What to bring

Proper boots, layers, water, and something to eat. Your guide carries a first aid kit and knows what the weather is doing. If you are unsure whether your boots are adequate, they probably are not — say so when you book and your guide will tell you what to get.

Common questions

How fit do I need to be?

Say honestly what you can manage in the notes and the route is built around it. A half day at a gentle pace on a good path is achievable for most people in reasonable health.

Can we bring children?

Yes, with the route chosen accordingly. Tell us their ages — it is the single biggest factor in what is sensible.

What happens if the weather turns?

Your guide decides, and that decision is not negotiable. If the day is cancelled for safety we move it or refund it.
